Akron, Ohio, Feb. 15, 2005 A team of UA entrepreneurship students has
been selected as a finalist in the prestigious national 2005 Spirit of
Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development Business Plan Competition,
known as SEED. The team was selected as one of nine finalists who will
compete among the countrys leading entrepreneurship programs.
Jing Wang of Shanghai, China and Katie Kurth of Tallmadge, Ohio will represent the College of Business Administrations Fitzgerald Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies on March 4-6 in Santa Barbara, Calif., with their business plan titled XGEM Microgenerators. XGEM has also been selected as a finalist for the University of Akrons 2005 Annual University-wide Business Plan Competition on April 2, 2005 at 9:00 AM at the Martin University Center. Everyone from the community is invited to attend the event.
According to Dr. Todd Finkle, the Director of the Fitzgerald Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, This is another example of the quality that comes out of this entrepreneurship program. We can compete with the best in the country. The plan originated with the founder, Robert Foraker. Our students took the concept and improved upon it with the assistance of faculty and our committed advisory board.
The UA students are one of nine teams chosen from a field of 45 entrepreneurship programs. The team will compete for $15,000 in prizes against top programs including Boston University, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Arizona, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Florida and the University of Texas. The competition is sponsored by TechKnowledge Point, a California company that connects growing firms with market research and business contacts and is responsible for the rankings of entrepreneurship programs.
The University of Akron's entrepreneurship program was ranked in the top tier of regional schools in entrepreneurship education in Entrepreneur magazines 2004 rankings. The Fitzgerald Institute was launched in 1996 with a $2.5 million grant from William Fitzgerald, the former president and chief operating officer of Cooper Tire & Rubber Co., and a UA alumnus.
The University of Akron is the public research university for Northern Ohio.
